Traveller is a safe ride system that integrates the previous Live Drive and Safe Ride programs into one program. Traveller serves the Washington and Lee Community as both a sober driver system and a convenient and safe campus bus route. Traveller uses a student dispatch system with a single call number – 458-8900 – and is operated as a local transportation bus system in the evenings, seven days a week with expanded coverage on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Funding for the Traveller program is shared among the administration, fraternities and sororities, and the Student Executive Committee. University Traveller vans, driven by members of the Washington and Lee community, complete a circuit bus route around the perimeter of the Washington and Lee campus including the East Lexington/Windfall area. This circuit includes eight stops that are identified by metal benches. Maps of this circuit are posted on campus. This bus route system is supplemented by volunteer drivers from over twenty organizations, primarily fraternities. These drivers work on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings and respond to requests from students for safe rides to locations outside the van circuit bus route. It is important to emphasize that Traveller is not a substitute for the required sober driver systems in fraternities/sororities. Furthermore, students should continue to have a designated driver when driving vehicles to parties. It is also important to understand that the Traveller system is limited to the times and services listed below. Finally, an important aspect of Traveller is individual personal responsibility. Every member of the Washington and Lee community must make a personal commitment – not to drink and drive. Visit the Traveller Web Page for Hours, Route and Administration. The W&L AIDS STOP program aims at educating students about the risk and consequence of HIV/AIDS. The program will educate interested students about the facts of AIDS and train them to be peer educators on campus. STOP AIDSwill also sponsor guest speakers on the topic of AIDS awareness and prevention. The program will also attempt to establish ties with local areas high schools and middle schools to teach other students about AIDS. We will also promote AIDS awareness and research through establishing tries with other organizations and performing fund raising activities throughout the year. We will recruit students through campus notices, posters and during freshman orientation. The benefits, as we see them, to the W&L community include increased awareness of the AIDS epidemic, education of sexual risks on campus, and a stronger tie between the students of W&L and the surrounding area. SOAR---Students Organizing Alternative Recreation We seek to encourage a strong sense of unity within the Washington and Lee community. Although our organization exists primarily for the interests of independent students, our activities are open to all members of the student body, regardless of affiliation. Washington and Lee continues to grow more diverse, and our organization recognizes the need to provide a social environment where all students can feel welcomed. This objective represents our primary focus. Our activities will:
SAMS---Student Athlete Mentors A SAM is a peer counselor who assists the Athletic Department in health awareness and education. They work with other student athletes on their team in helping to recognize substance abuse, nutritional problems, alleviate stress and strive to create a healthy environment. The concept of confidentiality is extremely important in the SAM role. An alcohol-free campus-wide event was held on Friday March 21. Activities will be sponsored by fraternities/sororities, student organizations and staff. Students will earn auction dollars to bid on prizes, late night music and pizza.
